Richard Hoare, Esq Private Secretary Government House
cc: Mr Alan Paul
FCO, HKD
Dear Richard,
Governor's August Visit
15 July 1991
ED
We understand that the Governor will be in the UK on leave from 28 July to 31 August and that he intends to be in London on 29 and 30 August. Chris Jackson's secretary has subsequently advised us that the Governor will arrive London from Aberdeen on 28 August at 2130 (on BA5915).
Having regard to the above, we have prepared a very tentative outline visit programme in MIFF for the Governor's consideration.
You will notice that we have not recommended any formal meeting with the media despite an earlier indication by you that the Governor would like to meet the UK press and HK stringers and any media people from Hong Kong during his duty visits to the UK. This is because we think that, at the end of his long vacation, the Governor may feel that he is not sufficiently up-to-date on developments in Hong Kong for him to meet the media here for in-depth discussions. If, however, the Governor wishes to meet the media for general, non-specific PR purposes, suggest that he meets two or three national editors (or alternatively, foreign editors of dailies and Sundays) over lunch.
we would newspaper national
This tentative programme provides for meetings with FCO Ministers and officials as indicated.
