MAJOR GENERAL A G H HARLEY CB OBE
Major General Alex Harley was commissioned from Sandhurst into the Royal Artillery in 1962. His first Regiment, in which he spent four years, was 7th Parachute Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, part of 16 Parachute Brigade.
He saw active service in the emergency situations in Aden and Cyprus, and more recently tours in Northern Ireland. He has also served in Bahrain, Oman, Canada and West Germany.
In addition to serving with parachute artillery, he was in 1972 adjutant of a heavy air defence regiment (Thunderbird 2).
He has also served twice with self propelled field guns in Germany, commanding a gun battery (1975-78) and later 19 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery (1980-82). Between these two tours in Germany he joined the Directing Staff of the Staff College, Camberley.
He has carried out three tours in the Ministry of Defence. First as a Captain in Army Staff Duties 2 (1968-70) and then, after the Canadian Army Staff College, in the rank of Major as the Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Intelligence) (1973–75). The third tour was from 1982-1985 as a Colonel, but in two separate posts: for two years the Director of Defence Commitments UK and then for nearly a year he was a member of the Defence Organisation Secretariat which was implementing the reorganisation of the Ministry of Defence in 1984/85.
He commanded 33 Armoured Brigade and Paderborn Garrison, in West Germany from 1985 to early 1988. Following which he became the Assistant Chief of Staff (Operations) in
Headquarters Northern Army Group, before being promoted to Major General and assuming the appointment of Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Overseas) in August 1990.
He is President of Army Hockey. He and his wife Tina have two sons.
