Richard Hoare, Esq Private Secretary Government House

Dear Richard

22 May 1991

I understand from Warner Cheuk that you spoke to him yesterday about the Governor's visit in June and asked us

to:

2.

(a)

(b)

(c)

arrange a lunch, rather than a meeting, with diplomatic correspondents, on 27 June (Thursday);

re-schedule either the meeting with the British- HK Parliamentary Group or the dinner at Cowley Street, on 25 June (Tuesday), So that the

Governor needs not rush from the former to the latter;

arrange meetings with trade and industry

ministers and/or senior officials of DTI in the morning of 27 June (Thursday).

As regards (a), we shall arrange a lunch for the Governor with diplomatic correspondents on 27 June (Thursday) as requested.

3.

As regards (b), we propose to bring forward the dinner at Cowley Street from 25 June (Tuesday) to 24 June (Monday), say 7:30 pm for 7:45 pm. The meeting with the BHKPG will remain unchanged, at 6 pm 7 pm on Tuesday 25

June.

P

4.

As regards (c), we have been in touch with DTI. Their advice is that for Ministers, the Governor can meet either Tim Sainsbury, Minister for Trade, in the morning of 27 June, Thursday, or Peter Lilley, Trade and Industry Secretary that afternoon. For officials, a meeting has been arranged with Mr Christopher Roberts, Deputy Secretary, External Trade Policy, Single European Market and other EC matters. He will possibly be accompanied by Christian Adams, the Head of Overseas Trade Division Projects and Export Policy Division, and by David Love, Head of Branch 2 (responsible for China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and S.E. Asia), Overseas Trade Division. The exact timing is dependent on the timing of the meeting with Minister. We have been asked to give an early confirmation of whether the Governor wants to meet Mr Sainsbury or Mr Lilley.
