REPORT OF THE CPA DELEGATION'S HONG KONG

VISIT 12-17TH SEPTEMBER 1991

Hong Kong was originally to have been a one night stopover with a short meeting with Hong Kong CPA members during our return

journey from Austrália. Before we left the UK to visit

Australia, the Hong Kong Government had generously agreed to support a visit extended to five days and to lay on briefings on

the current issues facing the Territory. How lucky we were, for

these five days proved to be very valuable and indeed full of

activity.

Lord Thomas led our first day discussion with Hong Kong CPA

members, the Hon Allen Lee Peng-Fei, the Hon Cheung Yan-Lung and

the Hon Stephen Cheong Kam-Chuen and Branch Secretary Alan Law

Kam-Sang.

This was a most useful discussion and we were

reassured by the confidence which we feared might have been still

lacking in the wake of Tianemen Square tragedy. We were to find

that Hong Kong's natural vibrancy and will to succeed had

reasserted itself in almost all of the discussions we were to

have. We were also briefed on the the first day by Assistant

Chief of Staff, Colonel Innes and the Civil Adviser to Commander

British Forces, Dr Hamill on the situation as far as the Armed

Forces and security was concerned.
