Dear Grahare,
Before I get totally immersed in the work of Hong Kong Department I wanted to write to thank you and David Powell for your help and advice during my recent visit to Tokyo. My particular thanks to you, Graham, for the splendid dinner on Monday night, which I much enjoyed.
I found the visit most worthwhile, and I think I was able to gain some useful insights into Japanese attitudes towards Hong Kong. Meeting such a wide cross-section of Japanese opinion over dinner was a real bonus.
As I said before I set off on Tuesday, my short stay convinced me that we should be doing all we can to strengthen our dialogue with the Japanese over Hong Kong as well as other areas where our interests coincide. I hope my visit, following that of Miyamoto, will help to establish a regular pattern.
Please pass on my thanks to David Powell for his help with the programme. I thought the arrangements were just right.
You might appreciate, incidentally, a copy of a minute I produced on my return, summing up my thoughts and including a note of my meeting with Sagawa of C Itoh.
Yours ever Alan
