To recruit the number of Administrative

Officers

necessary to meet present and future manpower needs

To enhance

understanding of China among Administrative Officers and

senior

departmental officers, and generally equip them for more effective

contact with PRC officials

Out of a total of 31 offers of appointment made in 1989/90, 29 appointees have reported for duty. Of the two remaining candidates, one will report duty in June and confirmation of acceptance from the other is still awaited. As regards the 1990/91 recruitment exercise, over 300 candidates have been shortlisted for selection interview in Hong Kong in April, whilst about 20 candidates will be interviewed in United Kingdom, United States and Australia in May.

Spring reception organised on 4 March for AO Liaison Group Convenors, JLG Chinese Officials, and local NCNA representatives.

Group of five AOS (SGB, SGC, SAOS, AO) made a study visit to Peking from 18 to 22 March. The programme was organised by BE, Peking and included visits to ministries and institutes.

Nicholas Lardy, Professor of Chinese Studies at Washington State University, USA, and an expert on the Chinese economy, gave the second "Senior China Seminar" on 25 March. His talk on Chinese economic reforms was followed by a lively discussion among 15 participants (policy branch secretaries and selected heads of departments). Plans are being finalised for the directorate seminar on Hong Kong-China interface. The seminar will be chaired by Leo Goodstadt, and take place from 22 to 26 April.
