Parliamentary Debate on Hong Kong
When talking to a number of MPS on 24 April, the Secretary of State was given a strong steer in favour of the Government finding time for a debate on Hong Kong fairly soon. The debate could be hung on the peg of the Annual Report to Parliament on Hong Kong. The Secretary of State himself would take part in the debate and its purpose would be to put firmly on the Parliamentary record the Government's present policy.
I should be grateful if you would tell the Lord President's Office and the Whips' office that the Secretary of State would like to pursue this idea of a debate and ask for their views. If necessary I could then talk to Murdo MacLean in the Whips' office and/or Tim Sutton in the Lord President's Office.
