ELECTION ARITHMETIC

THE RESULTS

Of the 272 people elected on March 3:

(a) 162

identified themselves with a specific

political party or group; and

(b) 110 refused to accept a party label and stood

as independents. (Some have since declared

their affiliations.)

4.

For the District Boards as a whole, the elections

have produced the following balance of political forces:

(a) The "Democratic Block"

(b) The "Conservative Block"

(c)

"Independents"

100 seats

62 seats

110 seats

5.

In practice, the available evidence suggests that

the majority of the "independents" will fall naturally into

the "conservative" camp. ("Democrats" were more likely than

declare their allegiance during the

"conservatives"

to

campaigns.)
