Dear Joh
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on your draft letter addressed to Julian Walsh Esq, Chairman of The Concerned British Expatriates Society.
Please find below a suggested redraft of the second paragraph.
"There is indeed a considerable backlog in the handling of naturalisation cases. Applications currently being
decided were made on average 31 months ago. This is indeed unfortunate but readily explicable. 31 December
1987 marked the expiry of the transitional provisions of
the British Nationality Act 1981 which allowed
Commonwealth citizens resident here since 1973, and women
married to British citizens before 1 January 1983, to be
registered as British citizens. In the course of 1987
the Home Office received some 300,000 applications in
all, which produced considerable strains on the
processing system. The Home Office set up a new office
to help clear the applications but the after effects of
the 1987 influx are still being felt."
Yours ever, Cuk
