Action Taken

This is to draw your attention to what could become a rather embarrassing and possibly difficult situation.

This morning I had an enquiry from New Civil Engineers magazine asking about the situation regarding settlement in the UK after four years employment. I explained that a work permit holder can apply for settlement after four years. The journalist went on to tell me that the Department of Transport is currently advertising for civil engineers from Hong Kong....so one Government Department's aim, through the Bill, is to encourage key people to stay there and another Department is inviting them to take up employment here! While the numbers involved may be small, the potential embarrassment is there and the opportunity exists for a jolly good diary story, if nothing else.

I spoke to Mike Ricketts at Transport who says that it is the case that they are advertising and that with the Bill in mind he had "put flags up at the time". He is now pursuing his own enquiries and will come back to me.

Mr Lloyd's Private Office and the Bill team have been notified.
