LETTER FROM PATRICK THOMPSON MP ABOUT HONG KONG
A
Problem
1.
Mr Thompson has written to Mr Garel-Jones enclosing correspondence from his constituent Mr D A Hawgood about the
position of non-British spouses of British expatriates in
Hong Kong.

C
Recommmendation
2. I recommend that the Minister reply on the lines of the
attached draft, based on the standard Home Office line to
take.
Background
3. Mr Hawgood has written before about the position of his daughter-in-law. His son is a member of the RHKPF and feels
that his time in Hong Kong should count towards the
residence requirements which his wife must meet before British citizenship can be granted.
4.
Mr Maude's previous answers (of October 1989 and 23 February 1990 to Mr S Hawgood) set out the position on the nationality status of non-British spouses of British expatriates as it then stood.
