HONG KONG: ASSÚRANCES
1. Mr McLaren had a telephone conference this afternoon with
Mr Langdon and Mrs Grimsey from the Home Office, Mr Paul and I were
present. The following aspects of the Nationality Bill were
discussed.
Presentation/Publicity
2. It was agreed that the Home Office would provide a draft of the
press statement and defensive material which we would fax to the
Governor over the weekend. We would make clear that this was a
first draft which was being submitted to the Home Secretary. We
would submit the material to our Ministers on the same, provisional

3. The Governor had pointed out that 5 April was a public holiday
in Hong Kong and for this reason had asked if he could give advance,
confidential briefing to a number of senior and/or influential
people late on 4 April (HK telno 1107). Mr Langdon agreed to seek
the Home Secretary's views on this, and agreed to seek our
Minister's views. We would then agree a line on 2 April.
