Others will make to you cogent points on how this proposal will undermine the credibility of our immigration policy to other groups of immigrants with equally poignant and pressing reasons. to come here, not only from the Indian Sub-Continent but from Africa, particularly South Africa, the Caribbean and elsewhere, many with close kinship ties with this country.
You have sufficient powers under the 1981 Act when Hong Kong's position was specifically addressed and debated to provide for those who have good reason to believe they will be subjected to unfair treatment by the Chineses because of their loyalty to Britain. There is ample provision for Hong Kong Chinese to invest here and thereby gain entry. To add 50,000 Chinese and their families will, I repeat, undermine confidence in Hong Kong
the reverse of what you are trying to achieve.

I beg you to abort this ill-conceived proposal before it is too late. Such a decision may involve the resignation of some senior Hong Kong Government Officials but they can be replaced.
I believe you have allowed your natural generosity, kindness and decency to overcome your judgment.
