what about the non-Chinese ethnic minorities (Indians in Hong Kong)?

The future of the non-Chinese ethnic minorities is safeguarded under the joint declaration with China, and by the provision of British Overseas Citizen status for any who would be stateless, down to the second generation born after 1997.

We have given an assurance that if they came under severe pressure to leave Hong Kong in the future, and had nowhere else to go, those who were British nationals would have their case for admission considered with particular sympathy.

What about the wives of expatriate British citizens in Hong Kong?

We are considering whether any further arrangements are necessary to protect the position of spouses of British citizens in the special circumstances of Hong Kong, and in particular the position of a spouse who is widowed before the couple settle in the UK. We hope to be in a position to announce our conclusions in the relatively near future.

What about widows of Hong Kong ex-servicemen?

Very similar considerations apply to the widows of ex- servicemen who fought in the defence of Hong Kong during World War II. We are looking at their position together with the spouses of British citizens and we hope to make an announcement before long.
