HOUSE OF COMMONS

LONDON SWIA OAA

Rt Hon Margaret Thatcher MP

The Prime Minister

10 Downing Street LONDON

SW1A 2AA

Dear Prime Minister

We thought it might be helpful if those of us who oppose the proposal to legislate to grant right of abode to an estimated 225,000 Hong Kong Chinese set out to you our concerns.

Whilst we are clear that there is an obligation to offer a right of abode to those Crown servants who might be at risk under Chinese sovereignty, we believe their position is safeguarded by the British Nationality Act 1981.

As we consider the political implications of the collapse of the Alliance and the resurgence of the Labour Party, we view with great anxiety the effect in critical seats - particularly in London, the Midlands and North West of the Government's proposals to allow increases in immigration for the first time since 1972, while the Labour Party is opposing such an increase for the first time since 1970.

Yours ever
