Although the figure of 45,000 to 50,000 total emigration is a small proportion of the total of 5.7 million people living in Hong Kong, emigrants are often well-educated, highly skilled, and engaged in professional, technical, managerial and administrative occupations.
Available statistics indicate that approximately 315,000
people in Hong Kong currently fall into the PTMA
category.
* In 1988, over 3 percent (11,200) of PTMA employees
emigrated from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's economic growth and quality of life is dependent on the availability of these PTMAS.
The profile of emigrants is influenced by two factors:
The immigration regulations of host countries favour young skilled and educated people, as well as
investors.
The opportunity cost of moving is lower for younger people (below 45). They often do not have as much
invested in their careers as do the older employees and they can more easily relocate and maintain their
current living standards in another country.
It is often argued that the economic impact of emigration
would be labour shortages followed by wage increases.
This assumes that entrepreneurs keep investing.
