Action Taken

HONG KONG: INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT

1. The response to our efforts has generally been very encouraging. A number of Countries approached are coming up with schemes to provide right of entry without the need to leave Hong Kong. This is similar in its aim to our own nationality package.

2.

As far as our EC partners are concerned:

-

the French Government are implementing a scheme to grant a number of employees of French companies in Hong Kong the right of entry to France, but without their having to leave the territory.

the FRG, Belgium and Luxembourg are about to finalise schemes of broadly the same nature.

Italy are also looking at a scheme but it is not yet finalised, once again catering for employees of Italian companies in the territory.

We understand that Denmark also are looking at a scheme on similar lines, but this may be in tandem with other Scandinavian countries.

3.

Hong Kong is an international banking and trading centre and it is in all our interests to keep it stable and prosperous. We hope the Netherlands will also be able to offer something, no matter how limited in numbers.
