"EC beoming more of a political union"
By Lotta Engzell-Larsson
"EC is attaching more importance on being a political rather than an economic union", said Great Britain's deputy foreign minister, Francis Maude, at a lecture given on Tuesday evening at the Institute of International Affairs in Stockholm.
Francis Maude pointed out that there would be no lack of problems were the number of neutral states applying for membership were to increase. "Neutral states weaken the political cooperation", he said.
National sovereignty was an important question for members of both EC and EFTA countries. The Swedish government has vacillated about whether neutrality or sovereignty was crucial to the Swedish attitude on membership.
"Sovereignty is now polarised between EC and individual countries. The EC countries have decided once and for all that it was in their interest to be part of EC, and they must take the consequences of this decision, said Francis Maude.
There is little understanding in Great Britain for the EFTA countries, including Sweden, which want to stay outside EC legislation in the agreement on cooperation now being worked out between EC and EFTA.
