CALL BY MR GOH CHOK TONG, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, SINGAPORE
1. Mr Goh Choh Tong accompanied by the Singaporean Minister of
State for Foreign Affairs and Finance, the High Commissioner and the
High Commission Counsellor called on the Secretary of State at 10.00
am on 20 April.
2. Secretary of State welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister and
enquired about future developments in Singapore. Mr Goh said that
he would succeed the Prime Minister in November/December. The date
had still not been set. He did not envisage any policy changes but
would maintain the ship on a steady course, and looked forward to
the continuance of the excellent bilateral relations that existed
between Singapore and the United Kingdom. Secretary of State
commented that Singapore sometimes attracted press and parliamentary
attention and that although the Singaporeans might not always like
what they read, this was not something which should be allowed to impinge on our good relations between us.

3. Secretary of State welcomed the initiative to allow up to 25,000
heads of household from Hong Kong to settle in Singapore and asked
