KOUCHNER, BERNARD
Secrétaire d'Etat, responsible to the Prime Minister, for humanitarian questions.
Born 1939 at Avignon.
Kouchner is best known for his work with the medical voluntary service organisations, Médecins Sans Frontières, which he co-founded in 1971; and Médecins du Monde, established in 1980, which runs medical centres in France for those who fall through the national health care safety net. He has been prominently associated with the despatch of 'mercy ships to pick up Vietnamese Boat people in the South China Sea.
Kouchner lives with the broadcaster, Christine Ockrent. They have one child.
