Proposal for a Cayman Island Government

Representative Office in Hong Kong

Thank you for sending me a copy of your letter of 19 February to Robin Gorham about the proposal to set up a Cayman Islands office here.

I see no constitutional objection to having such an office. But it is hard to see any significant benefit would result from it. As you say in your letter, those looking for offshore financial services are already pretty clued up. If you felt that they were not, and that you wanted to promote the attractions of the Cayman Islands, then the best approach would seem to be to work through the banks and investment advisers. As for tourism, you could always operate from the office you are thinking of setting up in Japan.

It rather looked, from your letter, as though the group here promoting the idea of an office had some scheme for passports in mind and hoped the Cayman Islands Government would subsidise their activities!
