Mr Maude's statement on international support during his recent visit. The line in the statement was agreed by DFAT in Canberra. We have never claimed that the flexibility in the existing Australian immigration rules are in response to our lobbying. accept that the Australian rules are applied worldwide but the important point is that Hong Kong people can benefit from them.
Obviously it would be better if further measures could be introduced tailored to Hong Kong's requirements.
