HONG KONG

1.

At Mr Maude's meeting this morning, the following points were agreed:

South Africa. We should consult further (within the office) on this; nothing needed to be done urgently.

Statement on International Support. Mr Maude will use the material you are drafting with the press during his Hong Kong visit, probably on Tuesday (after his meeting with EXCO); News Dept should also relay it to the UK press. We should alert the Governor and Mr Osborne and ask for advice on which themes to emphasise with the media on each day of his visit. (We have since spoken about this, and agreed to wait and see the advice on press handling already on its way from Hong Kong.)

Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. Mr McLaren said that the department was working on a game plan to explain to the Chinese the commercial rationale behind the Banks' decision.

- Joint Funding Scheme. Mr Maude will discuss this with Mr Sainsbury tomorrow.
