Rt. Hon. Douglas Hurd, CBE, MP,
Secretary of State,
Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Whitehall,
London, SW1A 2AH.
Dear Douglas,
abo egoyung
for x
En route to Sri Lanka from Hong Kong I had a 24 hour stop-over in Singapore. I took the opportunity to call on my friend Brigadier General Lee Hsein Loong. I had a 30 minute session with him and key points arising
were:
1.
2.
3.
4.
He is planning to visit Brussels in early December. I urged him to include the UK in his schedule. He has tentatively agreed either before or after Brussels, so we should follow this up.
He greatly welcomes the Glaxo investment and went SO far as to say he hoped for 2 or 3 more chemical companies from the UK. Michael Pike's strategy is clearly paying off.
Singapore's 25,000 passport offer has only been 50% taken up SO far and few of those have moved to Singapore.
He showed a high awareness of the Church leaders' criticism of our Government, maybe because they were just about to pass a law preventing church leaders meddling in secular matters!
We also discussed Cambodia, Burma, defence (no awareness of Leyland Daf although I dropped it in). The meeting was very cordial. I am copying this to Michael Pike as unfortunately I missed him.
Yours ever,
& NKI
