the Paris Economic Summit last Summer included the

suspension of Ministerial and high level contacts. partners have always appreciated the need for the UK and Portugal to maintain links with the Chinese Government

because of Hong Kong and Macau respectively. At no stage have they raised any objections to the contacts described

above. This was recently reaffirmed at the June Foreign

Affairs Council.

5. There has been some limited Parliamentary interest so

far in these contacts (the relevant extracts from Hansard

are attached).
