likely level of emigration from Hong Kong in 1990 is about

60,000 (ie an average of 1,100 to 1,200 per week). A more authoritative figure will be available in the autumn, based

on the annual returns from Consulates and High Commissions

in the territory.

The Hong Kong Government believe that around 25% of all

those leaving come from the professional, technical,

administrative and managerial sections of the working

population. About 15% of emigrants who have left Hong Kong

in the past two years have completed tertiary education.

disproportionately large number of emigrants are aged

between 25 and 44. There are particularly few emigrants in the age group of 65 and above.
