HONG KONG: THE POSITION OF THE NON-ETHNIC CHINESE MINORITY
Statistics
A survey carried out by the Hong Kong Government in
1986, based on Identity Card records, applications for
nationality registrations and other date, revealed that the
ethnic minority population in Hong Kong was around 11,500.
The detailed breakdown was as follows:

2. The President of the Council of Hong Kong Indian
Associations, in a letter dated 7 December 1989, estimated
that the total number of people of ethnic Indian origin,
without another nationality, was "no more than 3,000" and
that the total number of ethnic minority BDTCs did "not
exceed 6,000".
Chinese Nationality Law
3. The relevant Article of the Chinese Nationality Law is
Article 7 which states that:
"Aliens or stateless persons who are willing to abide by
China's constitution and laws may acquire Chinese nationality upon approval of their application provided
