FAC REPORT ON HONG KONG: GOVERNMENT REPLY

As requested in your minute of 14 May, I attach the corrected proof copy of the Government's reply to the FAC Report on Hong Kong.

2. PS/Mr Maude has asked if it would be possible to retain the option of inserting an additional passage at the end of paragraph 33 for another couple of days. If amended, the last sentence of paragraph 33 would read "The Government are doing this and have made a specific proposal that the United States might provide a regional holding centre, perhaps on Guam or another US Pacific territory." It should become clear within the next couple of days (and no later than 18 May) whether the insertion of this reference is desirable. I should be grateful to know how long HMSO could hold this page before going to print.

I have agreed with Ms Bailey that she will advise you on the number of copies required for distribution purposes.
