FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE EVIDENCE: 11 JULY

1.

Mr Robert Wilson has given me the following further indication of issues likely to be raised during the Evidence Session with Mr Maude on 11 July:

(a)

Contacts with the Chinese:

Chinese attitudes on current issues.

Channels for dialogue with the Chinese.

Scope for negotiation of improvement in Chinese position on key issues.

(b)

Basic Law

-

Chief Executive

(c)

Nationality: international support: commitments and undertakings received so far.

2.

(d) Consulate General.

(e)

Vietnamese boat people.

Mr Wilson admitted that these were still preliminary thoughts, and that he would not be able to give me a clear indication until Thursday 5 July, after he had spoken to the Chairman and one Committee member.

3. I appreciate that this does not give us much to go on. But I hope that Section Heads are getting on swiftly with preparation of briefing, which we will need to submit to Mr Maude by the weekend.
