Eurasians

Ministers have also confirmed in Parliament that the
assurances given to members of the non-Chinese ethnic
minorities apply with equal force to the Eurasian or Anglo-Chinese community in Hong Kong. [In recognition of
the particular concerns of the Eurasians, however, we shall
be discussing their position with the Chinese authorities to
see if there is anything more which they or we can do to
reassure the Eurasian community that their future is
secure].
International Support
In the immediate aftermath of Tiananmen Square, we
pressed hard to secure public commitments of support for Hong Kong from the international community. For example, the Paris Economic Summit Declaration recognised that the
international community had an important role to play in maintaining confidence in Hong Kong. We also raised Hong
Kong in a number of other multilateral fora, including the
Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting last October.
In the CHOGM communique, Commonwealth Heads of Government
"stressed the importance of Hong Kong's continued success as
an international trading an financial centre" and
"acknowledged the concerns of the people of Hong Kong and
agreed that those in position to do so would assist in any
way possible in promoting the continued prosperity of Hong
Kong". Since then we have continued to take every
opportunity to lobby our friends and partners bilaterally to
support Hong Kong.
Several countries have already taken specific measures
to support Hong Kong:
