Migration and Visa Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
present their compliments to the Austrian Embassy and have the honour to refer to the Austrian Embassy's Note No 465/4-KONS/90
requesting confirmation that holders of British National (Overseas)
passports and British Dependent Territory Citizen passports can be considered as falling under the regulations of the Exchange of Notes
between the United Kingdom and Austria concerning the abolition of
visas of 1968.
The Department can confirm that the holders of such passports can be
considered as falling under paragraph 6 of the said Exchange of
Notes only where the passport is endorsed to the effect that the holder is entitled to re-admission to the United Kingdom. In the
absence of such an endorsement, the Department confirms that the
holder would be accepted back by the territory issuing the document.
The Department would like to emphasise the following points:
(a) the Embassy may be assured that the returnability of BDTCs to their respective dependent territory is an adequate safeguard; and that the same is true of BN (0)s.
(b) as far as Hong Kong is concerned, of the twelve EC countries, only four at present require visas from Hong Kong BDTCs and BN(0)s:
France, Germany, Portugal and Denmark: and it is intended to try to
persuade these four countries to drop the visa requirement in
future.
