The Secretary of State had a meeting with Mr. Ronald Grierson of
G.E.C. in his room at the House of Commons on 11th January.
Mr. Grierson first raised a point which he believed was relevant
to our proposals for Hong Kong, that people who acquire British
citizenship are not able to claim British Consulate protection
in their Countries of Origin after acquiring their British
citizenship. The Secretary of State undertook to look into this
point.
Secondly, Mr. Grierson suggested that if discussion is to take
place about the possibility of amendments to the Treaty of Rome,
consideration should be given to increasing the powers of the
Ministers and to decrease the powers of the
Council of
Commission.
