The New Airport

At Chek Lap Kok

The site selected for the new international airport is at Chek Lap Kok, just to the north of the village of Tung Chung on Lantau Island, some 28 kilometres west of the existing airport at Kai Tak. Land for the airport will be formed primarily by the levelling of the islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau and by using the excavated materials and sandfill for reclamation.

The new airport will have one runway operational by early 1997 with the second runway being phased into operation in accordance with air traffic demands. The ultimate capacity will be about 80 million passengers and 4.4 million tonnes of cargo annually. The airport will use state of the art technology and it will operate 24 hours a day.

The airport's 1000 hectare site will require the reclamation of 650 hectares of sea. Ninety million cubic metres of rock will be excavated in the removal of Chek Lap Kok Island and 130 million cubic metres of fill will be placed. The two runways will be about 3 700 metres long with the separation being up to 1 525 metres, although a decision has not yet been made on this.

In July, 1990, Greiner-Maunsell was awarded a consultancy to prepare: The Airport Master Plan; the Environmental Impact Assessment; and the contract drawings for site preparation.

Their work will be completed at the end of 1991 and main site preparation will start in early 1992. In early 1990 work will start, however, on the preparation of an Advanced Works Area.

North Lantau Expressway

The North Lantau Expressway will be a dual three-lane expressway, about 13.5 kilometres in length, which will provide a connection from the new airport and the new town at Tung Chung to the western end of the Lantau Fixed Crossing at Tsing
