Mr. CHONG Chu-choi,

Chairman,

Tung Chung Rural Committee,

Tung Chung,

Lantao Island,

N.T.

Dear Sir,

New Airport at Chek Lap Kok

I am grateful to you and to your colleagues from Tung Chung and Chek Lap Kok, for taking the time to come to the District Office/Islands on the 23rd May 1990, to present your views on the Airport Development, and resumption and clearance matters. I found the meeting very useful to learn at first hand the problems and concerns of local people. It is hoped that the Rural Committee found the information provided by the various Government departments of interest and useful.

In this letter I wish to take up the main concerns which you have raised in your letter to the Director of Buildings and Lands dated 26th February 1990, the letter presented to

on the 23rd May 1990 and the issues raised at our meeting.

(A) Clearance of Chek Lap Kok

Government original intention was to clear Chek Lap Kok in 3 phases. Phase 1 to be carried out in September or October 1990, for an Advance Works Area. This would involve only the northern tips of Chek Lap Kok and involve the clearance of only 3 or 4 families. Phase 2 would involve the northern half of Chek Lap Kok and be carried out in April 1991, as the villages in this area may begin to experience environmental nuisance at about this time. Phase 3 would begin to be carried out later in 1991, possibly August 1991. It should be noted that development works in Phases 2 and 3 is unlikely to start until January 1992.
