Dear Sir,
We refer to your announcement and map dated 9 February 1990 and published on villare boards in areas affected by replacement airport developments.
We are surprised to notice that the perimeter of the area affected by airport construction seems to have been extended westwards. From maps and pictures published by the press so far we had gained the impression that the replacement airport's westem boundary would be limited to Lam Chau Island. We had not been aware that the whole shore as far as Shan Wat Wan would be destroyed by reclamation.
As a Lantau based environmental organisation we have an interest in preserving the beauty of a place which plays such a major role as an area for public rest and recreation. The path leading from Sham Wat Wan to Tung Chung follows the shore rather closely in many sections. Foreshore reclamation would affect the tens of thousands of hikers who visit this area every year, detract from the attraction which northern Lentau has to visitors and contribute to the further reduction of already limited recreational space available to the people of Hong Kong.
We contand that the construction of the replacement airport and infrastructure need not affect Lantau's northern sea shores west of Tin Sam and that any additional reclamation at Hau ik Wan, Sha Lo Man, 3an 3hek Van and Sam Vat Wan would cause an unnecessary and unjustifiable loss of precious natural scenery. For this reason we wish to register cur objection to foreshore reclamation at the above mentioned places, though we concede chat off-shore dredging may need to be carried out as far as Ian Chau Island,
Assuming that relocation airport related developments are actually ment to be airport related, we fail to see the reason for places as far away from the planned airport as Sha Lo Man on San Shek Man to be scheduled for development.
We hope your Department will do its utmost towards keeping the airport project ac compact as possible and do its best to minimize the destructive impact of the new development on Lentan's outstanding natural features.
Looking forward to receiving an encouraging reply from you, I remain
