Kowloon Reclamation and Expressway by building bridges
from Stonecutters Island to Argyle Street and to the
vicinity of Mei Foo. The northerly terminus of the
Western Harbour Crossing would be relocated to
Stonecutters Island and its length increased from
1,300 metres to 2,800 metres.
This overlooks the
independent need for the West
Kowloon Reclamation as an integral part of urban
improvements for the whole of Kowloon.
This
reclamation was originally included in development
plans in 1984 and is an essential part of the
Metroplan strategy for restructuring the crowded
districts of Mong Kok, Tai Kok Tsui and Yau Ma Tei.
The deficiencies which the reclamation of land
adjacent to these districts will assist in remedying
are the extremely high living densities, traffic
congestion and a general short fall of a range of
social, recreational and community facilities. A
specific objective of the Government planning for this
reclamation is to provide the means to construct a new
transport corridor through West Kowloon for road and
rail links and to integrate these with the existing
transport network. The Proposal ignores all of these
critical community needs.
