Introduction
3
This report provides an updated assessment
of capital investment in Hong Kong, based on data
available up to the end of 1989. It focuses on
investment in plant and machinery and in property.
2.
Information in this report is mainly supplied by the Census and Statistics Department, the
Rating and Valuation Department, the Buildings
Ordinance Office and the Industry Department. For
capital investment generally, statistics on gross domestic fixed capital formation are produced as part of the gross domestic product (GDP) estimates. Only the annual data are published. The quarterly
estimates are intended for internal reference only
and should not be quoted publicly. Breakdowns are
available for expenditures on plant and machinery and
on building and construction, in respect of both the
public and the private sectors. On investment in
plant and machinery, statistics on retained imports of capital goods provide another set of indicators. As there is no separate information on re-investment,
on depreciation, and on the scrapping of existing
capital, the data relate to capital investment in
gross terms.
On investment in property, statistics
are available on building completions and on consents
to commence work.
Investment in plant and machinery
(all growth rates quoted in this section are on a year-on-year comparison and are expressed in real terms, unless otherwise indicated)
