Dear Peter,
The Right of Abode Campaign with the British Parliament has, as you know, stimulated considerable debate and analysis on what is the true British commercial interest and side benefits from Hong Kong.
Adrian Swire kindly showed me a copy on how he had been able to identify gross salaries of £70 million per annum for his own U.K. nationals. I am sure it would be useful to do some further analysis on this, particulary on British expatriates employed by the Hong Kong Government.
One further important factor may be Significant Capital Inflows from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom and I enclose a list which identifies over the last two years a total figure of over £2 billion. These capital inflows certainly stimulated new jobs in the U.K. It would be interesting to work out for example, how many new jobs were created by Cable and Wireless in their Mercury activities which are being largely funded by disposals in Hong Kong.
Over the years Jardine's itself has funded expansion of its U.K. operations from its Hong Kong profits and I enclose a breakdown of the Jardine Group and its affiliates, summary of staff members which show out of
