Dear Pelé,

I have recently taken out figures, for internal purposes, to identify the gross salaries (plus bonuses and education allowances) paid to British U.K. nationals working in the Swire Group in Hong Kong, plus those U.K. nationals in the Group elsewhere whose livelihood depends directly on our Hong Kong operations.

I thought it might interest you that the figure comes out at about £70 mn. per annum. There is, of course, no way in identifying how much of this, at the end of the day, finds its way back to the U.K. in one form or another. Even if it was only say 20% of the total, it would still be a useful annual sum when multiplied to reflect all those British expatriates working for other firms and organisations in Hong Kong.

No acknowledgement, please. I just thought you might like to see another example of where Hong Kong is benefitting the U.K. economy, but where it is virtually impossible to quantify the true figures.
