ARMED FORCES BILL

2/11

-

PROVISIONS AFFECTING GURKHAS

I have spoken again to the Prime Minister about the inclusion of nationality provisions affecting the Gurkhas in the Armed Forces Bill, in the light of the points made in the previous Lord President's minute of 1 November. The Prime Minister is prepared to see the Bill proceed without the nationality provisions, so that it could be tabled rapidly, provided the Home Secretary is also content. In that event, we

can dispense with the meeting of OD on 13 November.

I am copying this letter to the Private Secretaries to members of OD, and Private Secretaries to the Home Secretary, the Defence Secretary and Chief Whips in both Houses, and to Sir Robin Butler.
