You sent John Boyd a copy of your letter of 17 July to David Wilson about the call paid on you recently by Ross Munro of the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia. As John is on leave (and I am in any case responsible for Asian - and American - matters) I thought I should thank you for keeping us informed.
I have met Ross Munro, though not in connection with his present research, and thought him quite well informed. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with, though, you say, the rejection of the 1979 proposal meant that the ideas then put forward played no part in the subsequent negotiations.

I am about to go on holiday, after visiting China with Francis Maude last week. It would be nice if you could find time to have lunch in the autumn.
