MR ADLEY ́S CALL ON SECRETARY OF STATE : 12 JUNE 1990
BACKGROUND
A
B
Lebanon
1.
When the Secretary of State met him on 8 May Mr Adley
sought advice on the possibility of visiting Lebanon as a
guest of President Hrawi's government. The Secretary of
State replied that he saw some political advantage, but
pointed out the security difficulties and left the decision
to Mr Adley.
2.
Mr Tatham, HMA Beirut, has offered accommodation and
close protection, if required, and also to accompany Mr Adley on his calls. If Mr Adley wishes to take him up on
this Mr Tatham wishes to avoid 25-30 June, 1-8 July and
11-28 August when he has other commitments.
3. If Mr Adley does go he should be aware that his arrival
(and depature) may be delayed depending on local conditions.
It would thus not be wise to make Lebanon part of a wider
itinerary.
Syria
4. When Mr Adley called on the Secretary of State on 8 May
he told him that he was anxious that as much contact as
possible should be maintained between Britain and Syria and
said that he was working to give Syria a more positive
profile in this country. He wrote to Mr Waldegrave on 8 May
expressing dissatisfaction with the written answer he had
been given to a PQ and Mr Waldegrave replied on 30 May.
