SPEECH BY LORD PRESIDENT ON FRIDAY 8 JUNE: HONG KONG

I have the following comments the Hong Kong extracts of the Lord President's speech:
a) page 57: the first indent should read "The
"resumption" by China of the exercise of sovereignty
over Hong Kong on from the date from which the lease
expired 1 July 1997". This more closely reflects the
wording of the Joint Declaration and the fact that by
recognising the historical significance of the date, the
Chinese were not however admitting the validity of the
lease.

b) page 57: in the third indent, "implementation" would
be better than "continuation". The constitutional
provisions set out in the Joint Declaration will not
