Negotiations on the future of Hong Kong: an account from the Hong Kong end

As you know, Tony Galsworthy spent his year's sabbatical working on a detailed history of the negotiations on the future of Hong Kong, using official papers. I have not seen the result myself but I have no doubt that it is a thoroughly competent piece of work. I assume that, because of the extensive use he made of highly sensitive official papers, it will not see the light of day until 2014 at the earliest. Nevertheless, it will be extremely valuable for the historians. Pity the poor research student who has to wade through all the papers of 1982 to 1984!

Tony Galsworthy's account will inevitably have a "London" flavour. I should like to see, in the archives, a parallel account looked at from the Hong Kong point of view with a "Hong Kong" flavour. will be papers here which Tony did not see and, more important, memories and atmospherics which are already beginning to fade.

I have it in mind to ask Bim Davies, who was intimately involved in the Hong Kong end of the story and is now retired, to come to Hong Kong and spend some six months writing an account. I have written to sound him out.
