1. As you are aware, JLG XV finished with an overnight excursion

to Datong. Tony Galsworthy and I both went together with eight f

of our team, accompanied by a comparable number from the Chinese side, led by Guo Fengmin, Zheng Weirong and Qiao Zonghuai. We visited some Buddhist caves outside the city followed by a number of historic buildings in the city proper. It was rounded off by a dinner hosted by the Shanxi Foreign Affairs Office Head, attended by Datong's Deputy Major. We returned by the overnight train.

2. I understand such trips used to be a regular finale to JLG sessions, though the practice has tailed off in the two years of my time here. We arranged a trip after JLG X for the Chinese to go I think to Manchester, Chester and York, but they were not accompanied by any of our JLG team (Carma Elliot I recall chaperoned them). The Chinese had pressed us to go to Tangshan after JLG XII but few of our team had time to stay on and a half-day visit to a Peking theme park was substituted. For obvious reasons nothing was arranged after JLG XIII in London.

3.

We thus need to consider what we should offer after JLG XVI. Our view is that we must try to arrange something. Tony Galsworthy also thinks he should reciprocate Guo's politeness and accompany him. The Chinese during casual conversation have shown some interest in Scotland, and with Glasgow being the European City of Culture this year that might be a possible destination together perhaps with Edinburgh for a two or three day trip. This would of course depend on you having or getting funds. Could you investigate what might be fixed?
