JLG XVI: CATEGORY II SPONSORED- VISIT-

Our roferante

Date 6 September 1990

1. Thank you very much for your proposed programme for JLG XVI Category II Sponsored visit to Scotland faxed to Tony Galsworthy on 24 August.

2.

Everything looks very satisfactory with the Edinburgh part of the trip, but seen from here the schedule for the Glasgow leg looks a bit heavy at present. If possible it would be nice to go out into the country to see some of the Scottish scenery (this would appeal to the Chinese). This might perhaps be achieved by stopping somewhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and rescheduling the Sunday afternoon programme. What about Perth for instance?

3. I recognise that you probably wished to keep official engagements for the Monday, which is a working day, and that the Glasgow authorities will want to have their opportunity to do a briefing. But I am a little nervous about the idea of Strathclyde Regional Council doing a briefing on the Chinese community in Glasgow. It would be very easy in such a briefing to get involved in delicate matters where offence could be taken. And whereas such a briefing could be relevant to the Chinese Embassy, our visitors might well consider what it had to do with them! Would an alternative to rearranging the Sunday programme perhaps be to leave after the Glasgow 1990 briefing on Monday and take the Chinese delegation out to lunch in the countryside somewhere nice, before going to the airport to catch a flight back to London Heathrow. British members of the party will take the 21.15 BA flight from Heathrow back to Hong Kong that evening: the 18.15 BA flight from Glasgow to Heathrow appears to provide a good connection. The Chinese delegation will return to central London.

4.

When the Chinese arranged a similar visit to Datong during the last JLG meeting in China, they managed to produce a Vice Mayor at the dinner. Is there any possibility of introducing an equivalent dignitary at some point in the programme?
