The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has the honour to refer to the Plant Protection Agreement for the Asia and Pacific Region, which entered into force on 2 July 1956.
On 6 June 1990, the Director General received from the Government of the People's Republic of China an instrument of adherence to the above mentioned Agreement. By the same instrument, the Government of the People's Republic of China accepted the amendment to Article I(a) which entered into force on 16 August 1969, the change of title of the Agreement which entered into force on 16 February 1983 and the further amendment to Article I(a) which entered into force on 23 May 1990. In addition, the People's Republic of China deposited an instrument of acceptance of the amendments to Articles II, III, IV and XIV introducing mandatory contributions for the Contracting Governments. The latter instrument was also received on 6 June 1990.
As far as the amendments to Articles II, III, IV and XIV are concerned, they will come into force in respect of each Contracting Government only on acceptance by it and as from the thirtieth day of such acceptance; it being understood that the total number of acceptances required for the entry into force of these amendments is two-thirds of the Contracting Governments. At present, 25 States are Parties to the Agreement and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and China have deposited an instrument of acceptance relating to these amendments.
