The thirteen Centres work in close collaboration with national agricultural research systems in developing countries. Their main function is research, both strategic and applied, to develop improved technologies which national research systems in developing countries need but do not have the capacity and/or resources to undertake. In order to be in the forefront of science and have the ability to draw on the results of basic research, the Centres maintain active relationships with a broad range of research institutions in both developed and developing countries.

The Centres collaborate with each other and with national programmes through multiple arrangements, such as research networks, outposting of Centre scientists, and other collaborative or contractual arrangements. The Centres also cooperate with bilateral and multilateral agencies which support research and technology development activities in developing countries.

These relationships are dynamic, reflecting the evolving capacities and needs to which the System must remain alert. The CG System has the organizational flexibility to take up new activities, expand existing ones. or shed old ones without having to resort to major structural or institutional changes.
