96. The regional project Small-Scale Fisherfolk Communities in the Bay of Bengal implemented sub-projects for improved extension service in Thailand; income generating activities in Indonesia; a fisherfolk radio programme in Sri Lanka; and developing new types of outrigger fishing canoes in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Results of the earlier regional project Development of Small-Scale Fisheries in the Bay of Bengal, completed in 1986, were evident in India where the beach landing craft contributed to increased fish landings, and opening of new marketing channels, in Sri Lanka where its work contributed to the initiation of a small-scale offshore fishery and in Bangladesh where motorization of Chandi boats brought higher incomes for small-scale fishermen. Under the small-scale Coastal Fisheries Development project for the ASEAN region, small-scale fisheries development activities were identified, and a workshop conducted on artificial reefs. FAO carried out studies on artificial reefs and fish aggregating devices in Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives, Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Assistance was provided to India in the design of motorized fishing craft for the small-scale fishermen of Kerala; to Sri Lanka in the establishment and operation of a field extension programme for small-scale fishermen; and to Maldives and Sri Lanka in obtaining information on tuna resources.

Philippines was supported in providing training in techniques of tuna fishing and fish handling. A study of trends in the exploitation of marine fishery resources in Asian countries was published. A regional seminar was conducted on Fishery Research Management in cooperation with

DANIDA.

Assistance provided to Maldives for survey of the reef fishery in Male atoll resulted in new data and a follow-up project to assess the development potential for reef fishing. Support to fisheries training activities in Pakistan through earlier projects was followed by the establishment of a national fisheries training centre. Vanuatu was assisted in improving management of the commercial and industrial fisheries. Assistance was provided to Tonga for planning a sustainable boat building programme. In the South Pacific sub-region, the Regional Fishery Support Programme responded to requests for assistance in legislation, boat-building and management of industrial fisheries.

Inland Fisheries

The IPFC Working Party of Experts on Inland Fisheries conducted a workshop on the Use of Cyprinids in the Management of Large Inland Water Bodies, which highlighted the significant contribution of this group to the total freshwater fish production from inland waters of the region.
