Indiscriminate and excessive use of pesticides, especially insecticides, in rice was considerably reduced with assistance from regional projects (GCP/RAS/092/AUL, GCP/RAS/101/NET and GCP/RAS/108/AGF). National capabilities in integrated pest management (IPM) in rice were strengthened in eight countries through the regional projects. The Chinese experience on IPM in rice was discussed at a regional workshop attended by nine countries. The status of IPM in vegetables was analysed; and a regional project proposal was finalized at a Regional Expert Consultation attended by twelve countries.

Awareness and capability of several governments for minimizing misuse and unsafe use of pesticides was increased. Under the regional project GCP/INT/457/JPN - Implementation of the FAO International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticide regional workshops involving about 20 countries on pesticide regulatory process and harmonization of bioefficacy test protocols were organized in twelve countries. Training courses were held on registration, regulation, distribution and safe and efficient use of pesticides in China, New Caledonia and Philippines, and more than 100 development officials and scientists were trained. The "Digest of Phytosanitary Regulations in Asia and Pacific Region", first published in 1971, was updated and widely circulated.
